So what do you think, are you ready to embark on this journey to become someone who is provisioned in SEO?
Then if you are, I will see you in the next lesson.

This lesson may sound supper basic but I bet you keep on before you misjudge the lesson. We are going to talk about the anatomy of web addresses.
I would assume you know what a domain name is. To locate Blogtostay and get to our website you will type “blogtostay.com” and Blogtostay.com is the domain name.

What about the “http:” or the “https:” or what if you have something in front of the domain name like: “https://lesson.blogtostay.com”?
With regards to the above description, this entire write-up example: “https://lesson.blogtostay.com” is called the web address.

Then “blogtostay.com” is the domain name, the “.com” is called the domain extension.
This can be .net, .org, .edu, .tlg, and so many extensions.
Then the “https://” or “http://” is called the web protocol and stands for (hypertext transfer protocol).

This is a requirement for Google or any search engine to get your website to rank on search engine results.
“https://” which is most used nowadays is more secure than the “http://”. To get the “https://” you will need something called the SSL(secure socket layer) and a form of security protocol that will enable you to secure and encrypt your website from hackers.

Normally this SSL(secure socket layer) should be provided for you for free by your hosting company and everything should be set before building up your website.
We will learn all these as we move on with this lesson so stick on as we progress.

Then if you see some letters after the protocol and before the domain name for example; “lesson.blogtostay.com” it is what is called the sub-domains.
Once you create a domain you can have multiple sub-domains attached to it. But generally, unless there is a need to separate your business processes, I advise you shouldn’t have a sub-domain.

Let’s assume you are selling a course on your website and you don’t want to include it on your domain you can go ahead and create a sub-domain.
A sub-domain is viewed as a separate website by search engines when crawling the web.
And most importantly a sub-domain will not inherit the domain authority of your main domain.

Unless there is the necessity to have a sub-domain, I advise against it.
Alright, now we have learned the anatomy of web addresses, let us get the site up and running.

Now this particular lesson is for those who do not have a website. I’m going to show you how to set up a website from scratch going through it step by step.

Even if you have a website, it is paramount to engage in this particular lesson because I will show you a couple of plugins to install and some settings to do to enhance the professionalism of your website.

So we will be using ONE.COM to buy our domain and hosting but you can use any domain and hosting company of your choice. Assuming you want to use ONE.COM.
Go to your browser and type in the URL https://one.com/en/wordpress-hosting

You will see some pricing options on the next page. If you need a simple blog, the EXPLORER price will be good. But if your website needs a lot of space to contain things like images, downloadable files, and videos then the ENTHUSIAST or GURU plans will be suitable for you.
But for this example, I will choose the ENTHUSIAST plan. Just click on “Add to cart”.

On the next page, you will be required to enter your domain name. Remember, your domain name has to reflect the type of businesses you will be building a website on top.
In my case, my own is a gym house equipment. Then I will type “homegymblog” and click on search. According to the image below the domain is available.

According to the image above, the four plugins are tick-marked for you and they are very important for your website. They include Rank Math which is responsible for your website SEO practices and auditing, Performance Cache Pro for maintaining your website cache as well, and Imagify used to optimize your image.

You can choose to install the maintenance mode pro as your site is still in maintenance mode or tick-mark the spam protection plugin which I advise you to do. Then hit the blue button at the bottom.

The next page will display varieties of THEMES and you can choose the one of your choice here. In case you already have a theme in mind and you don’t want ONE.COM to install a theme for you, feel free to skip this process.

Then the default WordPress theme will be selected for which you can upload your required theme and set it up.
Now we are ready, let’s get to the WordPress Admin Dashboard by clicking the “Go to WP Admin” button. Image description below:

To exit all these pop-ups from the plugin on the dashboard, at the extreme right-hand top click on “Screen Options” to open it and untick all the options and they will be gone. You can leave the ONE.COM option to check your site health always and click on it again to compress it back. Image description below:

The next thing to do is to update all your plugins. Click on “Plugins” at the extreme left-hand side menu bar and tick-mark all the plugins, open the bulk options select “Update” and click on the “Apply” button.

Also enable auto-update, to do so, click on “plugins” and at the extreme right-hand side along the particular plugin’s horizontal dimension locate “Enable auto-update” and click on it to automatically enable the process. Do it to all the plugins installed. Image description below:

Let us do one of the most important things while setting up your website which is setting up your WordPress website.

At the extreme left-hand side of your WordPress dashboard as usual locate “Settings” and hover your mouse cursor on it select “General” and click on it. Image description below:

SC-14
SC-14

This is where you can do some customization on your website like editing the site title, the tagline, the administration Email Address, and many other things.
Do not forget to tick-mark “Membership” (Anyone can register) to enable people to register on your website. Image description below:

SC-15
SC-15

Within the settings sub-menus scroll down and locate “Media” and click on it. It will display all the image settings. Remember, when you upload an image, your WordPress will create an additional three images with the original making it four image versions for a particular image with different sizes.
These versions are as thus:
— Thumbnail size.
— Medium Size.
— Large Size.
— With your original image.

Imagine when all these images are duplicated in this format and you have limited server space, this could slow down your website load time and you do not want to witness such.
To solve this, what you have to do is to untick-mark the “Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions” then reduce all the numbers within the box to ZERO and click on “Save Changes” to save the settings. Image description below:

SC-16
SC-16

The next settings option under “SETTINGS” is permalink.

PERMALINK:
Scroll down within the settings sub-menu and locate “permalink” Click on it to get you to the page. By default, WordPress will select the “Day and name” permalink structure.
This includes the date you published the content as well as the description of the content.

We will not be using this kind of permalink structure, unless your site is full of paper with research information so, we will be selecting the “Post name” permalink structure for our blog project.
Then click on “Save Changes.” Image description below:

SC-17
SC-17

Next, let’s talk about “PAGES” and “POSTS” because some people do get confused between the two. Then let’s talk about pages first.

PAGES:-> Pages are for static timeless content for example; ABOUT US, CONTACT US, SERVICES, PRIVACY POLICY, SAMPLE PAGES, FAQ ETC.
Anything meant to live on your website and does not require much update is among the pages.
You should be using pages for such information. These should also include SALES PAGES, LEAD CAPTURES, AND SQUIZE PAGES.

You can’t categorize tag pages in the default WordPress setup. This is the only difference between pages and posts.
But you can have a hierarchy of pages using the page “Attributes.” Image description below:

SC-18
SC-18

This is done by selecting the parent page of the page you are working on. For example, we are on the “Privacy Policy page.”
One of the functionalities of the POST and PAGES do not have is the comment section. You can drop comments on POSTS and get answered by others.

POSTS:-> Posts are meant for timely articles such as blog content, news articles, and other content that is relevant to a specific time frame.
With posts, you can CATEGORIZE and TAG your content.
Image description below:

SC-19
SC-19

So to simplify this, use pages for things related to your businesses and sales such as your SALES PAGE, PRIVACY POLICY ETC. Posts should be used to publish content that will rank on search engines for a particular keyword.

Now, the SEO plugin I will advise you to use is the Rank Math plugin. I have used it and it proved very good with simplified features. Before we start setting up Rank Math, register with Rank Math Here

To do that, go to the extreme left-hand side of your WordPress main menu at the bottom and click on Rank Math and it will bring you to a page like the image below:

SC-20
SC-20

Click on “Connect Your Account” and be redirected to a page like the image below:

SC-21
SC-21

To connect Rank Math to your account, input your email and password if you are not logged in then click the “OK, ACTIVATE NOW” button and you will be taken to the next page that looks like the image below:

SC-22
SC-22

Please select “Advanced” for it will display all the modules Rank Math has on the dashboard. Then click the “Start Wizard” button. Image description below:

SC-23
SC-23

You will be taken to a page where you will fill in all the information concerning your website. After filling in all the information as required, click on the “save and continue” button. Image description below:

SC-24
SC-24

The next step is to connect Google services. With these settings, you can set up your Google console as well as help you connect to your Google Analytics easily.
Feel free to connect to your Google services if you like, but I will explain this part when talking about indexing your web pages in further lessons.
So let’s skip this for now.

Let’s go to Sitemap, remember to toggle the button on so that Rank Math will create a sitemap for your site. Also, toggle on the posts and pages so that search engines will find your posts and pages easily.

Click on the “save and continue” image description below:

SC-25
SC-25

You will be taken to the “SEO Tweaks” Please do not mess up with this setting because this is based on the best SEO settings.
So just click on the “save and continue” button. Image description below:

SC-26
SC-26

You will be embraced with a page indicating a welcome message that looks like the image below:

SC-27
SC-27

Then at the left-hand side bottom of the same page above, click to return to the WordPress dashboard.
Thanks, now you have a fully functional website, it is important to get started with other relevant things. See you in the next lesson.
